Meeting the Dragons - Komodo and Rinca Island excursion

and Rinca Island

Komodo Island National Park and Rinca Island are World Heritage Sites recognized by UNESCO. Both Islands are the habitat of the Komodo Dragon, a population of about 2800 Dragons living and running freely.

The entrance is about 10 € plus the boat ride from Flores.

Stepping foot onto Rinca Island has been an impressive experience. Meeting the largest species of lizards, which grow up to 3 m in length and are about 90 kg heavy, has been an overwhelming encounter and became an unforgettable memory that I am gratefully looking back to.

Fun fact: They only eat every 30 days, which makes them quite lazy in-between time and good company on land and water.

For the manta addicts of us, an excellent destination to snorkel and dive, as many cleaning spots for those marvellous and spectacular creatures are close by - Flores is a great destination to dive as the underwater world is rich, and many diving schools are nearby.

Komodo Dragon Tour and How to Get to the Islands

If you are staying in Lombok and thinking of seeing the Komodo Dragons, you don't need to return to the airport. Check out the Lombok-Flores 3/5 day cruise. Many companies are sailing in this direction and making many stops at snorkel locations, smaller and hidden islands, etc. It's an excellent trip to meet other travellers and sleep aboard.

Soon as you step foot on Flores, I recommend going to the pier and hiring a boat from there; ask around you will definitely find a fantastic captain. That's how I made my way to the Komodo Dragons. I highly recommend hiring locals as we stopped in between to snorkel, bbq, and see some smaller islands, etc. - in conclusion, it's been an outstanding experience. Cheers to our captain, Bob.

There is a trip bookable from Lombok to Komodo Island for boat tour lovers and the adventurous explorer. The journey takes about four days and three nights. You spend three days on a boat which takes stops to snorkel, swim in the open sea, and much more. You get to sleep under the stars, which means you do not have a private room, high-class toilet, or washing facilities, but it is a pretty unique adventure which ends with visiting the Komodo Dragons National Park. Usually, the drop-off is in Flores, quite close to the Komodo National Parks and Rica Island - a great destination to dive as the underwater world is rich and many diving schools are located around the centre. Flores also has an airport - the flights to Lombok and Bali are super affordable, frequently going back and forth.
